Introduction to Super Duplex Stainless Steel
Pearl Steel Industries offers a premium range of Super Duplex Stainless Steel, a category of high-performance stainless steels known for their exceptional strength and outstanding corrosion resistance. Super Duplex stainless steels typically contain around 25% chromium, along with carefully balanced amounts of molybdenum and nitrogen.
As the name suggests, Super Duplex Stainless Steel features a dual-phase microstructure consisting of both ferritic and austenitic phases. This unique structure delivers an excellent combination of mechanical strength, durability, and resistance to aggressive environments, making it ideal for critical industrial applications.
History of Super Duplex Stainless Steel
The development of duplex stainless steels began in Sweden, originally created to overcome corrosion problems faced by the sulfite paper industry due to chloride-rich cooling waters. While early duplex grades offered improvements, they did not fully satisfy the demands of highly corrosive environments.
This led to the evolution of Super Duplex Stainless Steel. The first super duplex alloy, Ferralium 255, was developed in the 1960s. However, the term super duplex gained recognition in the 1980s, referring to duplex steels with a pitting resistance equivalent number (PREN) above 40, calculated using chromium, molybdenum, and nitrogen content.
Since then, several advanced super duplex grades have been developed to meet the needs of offshore, marine, chemical, and oil & gas industries.
Corrosion Resistance of Super Duplex Stainless Steel
Super Duplex Stainless Steel grades such as 2507 provide excellent resistance to both organic acids (including formic and acetic acid) and inorganic acids, particularly those containing chlorides. These alloys show strong resistance to:
- Intergranular corrosion
- Stress corrosion cracking in warm, chloride-rich environments
- Localised corrosion, such as pitting and crevice attack
The combined presence of chromium, molybdenum, and nitrogen, along with the duplex structure, ensures long-term performance even in harsh operating conditions.

Difference Between Duplex and Super Duplex Stainless Steel
Strength & Durability
- Duplex Steel: Stronger than conventional stainless steel, suitable for moderate stress
- Super Duplex Steel: Significantly higher strength, designed for extreme pressure and heavy loads
Corrosion Resistance
- Duplex Steel: Performs well in fresh water and mild chemical environments
- Super Duplex Steel: Superior resistance in seawater, chlorides, and aggressive chemicals
Alloy Composition
- Duplex Steel: Moderate chromium, molybdenum, and nitrogen
- Super Duplex Steel: Higher alloy content for enhanced performance
Cost & Lifecycle Value
- Duplex Steel: Lower initial cost
- Super Duplex Steel: Higher upfront cost, but longer service life and reduced maintenance
Typical Applications
- Duplex Steel: Water treatment, bridges, storage tanks
- Super Duplex Steel: Offshore platforms, marine systems, chemical plants
Weldability
- Duplex Steel: Easier fabrication
- Super Duplex Steel: Requires controlled welding procedures for best results
